Year Round Swim Teams

The following is a list of the year round swim team options in the area with a bit about each team and links. All of these teams are members of NC ( www.swimnc.com) and USA swimming and compete in sanctioned meets for both associations. Some teams may offer "prep" teams that do not swim in competitive sanctioned meets.

Most of these teams have a short course (25 yard pool) season from September to April and a long course (50 meter pool) season from May to July. Most teams will also take the month of August off.


New Wave Swim Team

New Wave Swim Team or WAVE have been in operation for about 20 years.

  • History: In operation for over 20 years.
  • Locations: Practices at various locations, including North Raleigh Christian Academy (6.5 miles from the neighborhood) and Optimist Aquatic Center (8.7 miles away). Other locations include Cary Swim Club and Springdale Area Recreation Club which both have outdoor heated pools for fall / winter use.
    • WAVE does not host swim meets at their practice locations. Swim meet location is dependent on the meet.
    • Optimist Aquatic Center is the only facility with a 50 meter pool for long course
  • Coaches: Coaching Staff
  • Programs: Offers competitive teams (yearly) and prep teams (monthly).
  • Costs: Meet fees are not included in the team dues.

TAC Titans

The TAC Titans are the competitive team that swims at the Triangle Aquatic Center (TAC). They have been in operation since the facility opened in 2007.

  • History: Established in 2007 with the opening of the Triangle Aquatic Center, which has become a state-of-the-art facility.
  • Locations: Practices are held exclusively at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary (17.7 miles away).
  • Facilities: The largest and most comprehensive aquatic center in the area. Features two indoor pools and a new outdoor pool. Has 2 Olympic size 50 meter pools for long course. TAC also has a state of the art gym for dry land workouts.
    • All practices are at the same facility.
    • Almost all swim meets are held at TAC.
  • Coaches: Coaching Staff
  • Programs: The Tac Titans divides each age range according to a child's ability to train. This allows athletes of similar speed, skill level, and competition to focus and learn together in a positive swimming environment. The TAC Titans currently has 4 training "Tracks" that consists of the Titans Prep, Development, Challenge, and our advanced Elite Track. Each Track varies in the number of competitions, practices per week, length of each practice, athletes per group, and accountability to technique. The goal is to develop a progression that ensures each athlete is learning the right skills at the correct time.
    • TAC offers 4 different tracks
      • Titans Prep - This track practices 2 to 3 times per week. This group also holds occasional "Mock Meets” designed to teach each child how competitions run. The main goal is to learn the basics of swimming in a controlled and lesson filled environment. This track is for beginner level swimmers excited to improve.
      • Development Track - This track practices 3 to 5 times per week. Depending on their skill level, athletes in these groups have the option to attend our "Mock Meet" or our regular competition meets. The goal here is to begin teaching more complex swimming motions to elevate their level of competition.
      • Challenge Track - This track practices 5 to 6 times per week. The goal is to begin setting higher difficulty challenges to develop a better feel for their speed through the water. Athletes in the Challenge track will begin to face tougher competition in higher race environments. Continuing to learn and grow in ability is a key piece of this track.
      • Elite Track - This track practices 6 to 8 times per week. The groups in this track are competition focused as their goal is to learn how to compete against other high-performance individuals. These athletes are held to a high standard of Excellence as they compete at the state and national levels.

YMCA of the Triangle Area

YMCA Of the Triangle Area or YOTA is one of the oldest competitive swim teams in the area. It's been in operation since 1971.

  • History: One of the oldest teams, founded in 1971.
  • Locations: Practices across the Triangle, including Raleigh, Cary, and Durham. The closest location to Hedingham is Southeast Raleigh YMCA (7.7 miles away).
  • Coaches: Coaching Staff
  • Programs: Offers competitive teams, non-competitive prep teams, and swim lessons. Membership: Requires YMCA membership.
  • Costs: Must be a member of the YMCA. Meet fees are included in the team dues.
  • Unique Aspects: Competes in YMCA-exclusive meets, including the YMCA National Championships.

Marlins of Raleigh

Marlins of Raleigh or MOR have been in operation since 2001.

  • History: In operation since 2001.
  • Locations: Multiple practice facilities across Raleigh, Cary, and Clayton. Some facilities are outdoor pools.
  • Programs: Offers competitive teams and possibly prep teams.
  • Achievements: Success in national competitions and a strong presence in age group championships.
  • Strengths: Experienced coaching staff, comprehensive training programs, and strong team culture.
  • Reputation: Highly competitive, known for producing collegiate-level and elite swimmers.
  • Notable Swimmers: Multiple swimmers progressing to collegiate and national levels.
  • Costs: Meet fees are not included in the team dues.

Raleigh Swim Association

Raleigh Swim Association or RSA is one of the oldest swim teams in the area. They have been in operation since 1959.

  • History: Established in 1959, making it one of the oldest teams.
  • Locations: Practices at various facilities, including the William H. Sonner Aquatic Facility in Raleigh (14.2 miles away), as well as Sunset Bluffs (the Bluffs) in Fuquay-Varina, Sunset Ridge North (North) in Holly Springs, Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center at NC State University and O.T. Sloan Pool in Sanford.
  • Programs: Offers competitive teams and potentially prep teams.
  • Achievements: Solid performance at regional and state levels, focus on all-around swimmer development.
  • Strengths: Strong emphasis on community, extensive experience with youth and developmental programs, and fostering a supportive and inclusive environment.

North Carolina Aquatic Club

North Carolina Aquatic Club or NCAC is a year round club that practices at UNC Chapel Hill's Koury Natatorium.

  • History: Practices at UNC Chapel Hill's Koury Natatorium.
  • Locations: Main practice site is Koury Natatorium, with a secondary location at Heritage Hills Recreation Club.
  • Programs: Offers swim lessons, monthly prep teams, and year-round competitive teams.
  • Parent Policies: Parents are not allowed on deck during practices.
  • Costs: Meet fees are not included in the team dues.
